Hi, I’m Coreen.
I have been writing pysanky for over 30 years, learning the art form from ancestors of the Slavic (Rusyn) region of the Carpathian Mountains.
While I teach classes on the writing of a traditional pysanky (ancient Ukrainian wax-resist eggs featuring symbolic, geometric, and nature-based folk motifs dyed in specific, traditional color sequences), I often use the same wax-and-dye method, to create free-form, abstract, or personalized art, which often also contain the traditional cultural, protective, or ritualistic symbols found in authentic Pysanky.
In addition to teaching Pysanky, I offer commission work. And when I’m not writing on eggs, I am doodling like a crazed maniac. I also love sharing what I see as a photographer and through written word. I’ve been photographing my friends and family for decades, and writing poetry and journaling (mostly just for myself) my whole life. I believe these skills are always in need, as life is very much a “wow” worth illuminating.
I also have a professional career in Environmental Literacy, which affords me opportunities to observe, wonder at and capture (through art) this gift of a planet.
I believe that science and art are twins — born of parents “Wonder” and “I wonder…” I think my professional life and my artists life beautifully merge in this philosophy.
